There are very few places on Earth that compare to the incredible landscape of the Sahara Desert. It is is vast, unique, often barren and occasionally vibrant part of the earth. Located on Morocco’s western border, the Sahara Desert is the world’s largest hot desert that covers 30% of the African continent, an area similar to that of the United States.
Despite the harsh conditions, the Sahara is home to an estimated two million people who have set up close to water sources (the desert receives up to 25 mm of rainfall per year, some small regions are fed by underground rivers that support lush palm groves and supply drinking water) and the ethnic tribes that live a traditional nomadic existence following ancient trade routes. Most famous of these tribes are the Berbers, descendants of the pre-Arab inhabitants of North Africa, who even after some 4,000 years maintain their own language and culture across the Sahara and much of Morocco.
Traveling in the Moroccan Sahara desert is a special experience that lets you see the natural beauty of an extreme landscape, and how humans have survived and flourished there. There are many fun activities available from cities and towns throughout the region.
You should experience the beautiful Sahara Desert in Morocco at least once in your life. From the majestic kasbahs and amazing oasis towns of the Draa Valley to the the incredible dunes of Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga, the Moroccan Sahara is perfect for an unforgettable journey.
For you to reach the dunes in the Sahara desert, you need to allow a minimum of three days since it is a full day’s drive there and a full day’s drive back to Marrakech. If you have more time we do recommend you take longer to enjoy the atmosphere and the spectacular kasbahs, film studios and nice hotels along the way to break up the long journey.
